Beethoven wrote Piano Sonata No. 23 around 1804 and 1805, and it was published in 1807. It uses the piano from very low notes to very high ones, and quiet moments suddenly explode into storms. The name "Appassionata" was added by a publisher in Hamburg after Beethoven's death.
In these years, Beethoven was also working on the "Eroica" Symphony and his opera Fidelio. It was one of the most productive periods of his creative life. Even while he suffered from hearing loss, his music grew bigger and more intense. In the first movement, you can even hear a low, eerie four-note figure that sounds like the famous opening of the Fifth Symphony.
The sonata was dedicated to Beethoven's friend Count Franz von Brunsvik. According to his pupil Carl Czerny, Beethoven thought it was his greatest sonata until he wrote the "Hammerklavier" Sonata, Op. 106. The writer Maxim Gorky reported that the Russian revolutionary Lenin also loved this piece.
This piano music is very strong and wild. Sometimes it is quiet. Then suddenly it becomes loud like a storm! Beethoven did not name it "Appassionata." A publisher gave it that name later.

According to his pupil Ferdinand Ries, Beethoven hummed and growled to himself during a whole walk. As soon as they got home, he rushed to the piano and played wildly for about an hour. What he played became the finale of this sonata.
Beethoven's handwritten score, now in the National Library of France in Paris, has many water stains. The family of the pianist Marie Bigot, who received the score, passed down a story that it got wet in a storm while Beethoven was traveling.
The writer Maxim Gorky wrote that the Russian revolutionary Lenin loved this sonata and said he knew nothing greater. But this story is based only on Gorky's memories.
The name "Appassionata" is said to come from an 1838 edition by the Hamburg publisher Cranz, who arranged the sonata for two players at one piano. The name fit the music so well that it stuck.
