Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor is one of Bach's most often played violin concertos. It is written for solo violin, strings and continuo, and it has three movements: fast, slow, fast. Nobody knows exactly when it was composed, but the oldest surviving parts come from Bach's Leipzig years, around 1730.
As a young man, Bach eagerly studied concertos by Italian composers such as Vivaldi. This piece uses the Italian plan in which a recurring theme for the whole orchestra, called the ritornello, alternates with passages where the solo violin shines. On top of that, it is full of Bach's own touches, with the instruments weaving closely together.
In the second movement, the violin sings a long, calm melody over a short pattern that the bass repeats. The third movement is fast, with a bouncing rhythm like a lively dance called a gigue. Later, Bach rewrote this concerto as a harpsichord concerto in G minor (BWV 1058). Today it is a classic piece that violin students dream of playing one day.
This is a concerto for violin and orchestra. The music is in a minor key, but it is full of energy. The violin and the orchestra talk to each other. Many young violin players learn this piece. Bach also made a version for keyboard.

For a long time, this concerto was thought to come from Bach's Köthen years (1717–23), when he wrote a lot of instrumental music for the court orchestra. But recent research suggests, based on the surviving parts and other evidence, that it may have been written in Leipzig. This great piece has no certain birthday.
In the Harpsichord Concerto in G minor (BWV 1058), the music was moved one step down from A minor to G minor. This was probably because the harpsichords of the time could not reach the violin's highest notes. Bach cleverly rewrote the music to fit the instrument.
Performing parts for this piece, one for each instrument, survive from around 1730, and some of them are in Bach's own handwriting. The rest were probably copied by family members and students. Bach's home was like a small workshop where everyone helped copy music.
Bach was also a skilled violinist, but only two complete concertos for solo violin survive: this one in A minor and one in E major (BWV 1042). Some of his harpsichord concertos are thought to be based on violin concertos that have been lost.
