The Story

The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, is a collection of keyboard music that Bach put together in 1722. It has a prelude and a fugue in each of the 24 major and minor keys, from C major to B minor. This is No. 5, the pair in D major. In the prelude, the right hand plays fast notes without a break, and the fugue is full of proud, jumping rhythms.

An earlier, unfinished version of the prelude appears in the Clavier-Büchlein, a notebook Bach began in 1720 for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann. So it was also a finger exercise for his son. The fugue has four voices, and its dotted, bouncing rhythms and quick runs recall the 'French overture' style that was popular at the French royal court.

The Well-Tempered Clavier was not published in Bach's lifetime. It spread through handwritten copies. We know that the young Beethoven played from it, and that Mozart studied it closely. The 19th-century conductor Hans von Bülow is said to have called it the 'Old Testament' of music, and Beethoven's piano sonatas the 'New Testament'.

This piece has two parts: a prelude and a fugue. In the prelude, the right hand never stops. The fugue has a proud, jumping rhythm. Bach first wrote the prelude for his son. It was a practice piece!

Listening Guide

In the prelude, compare the right hand's non-stop fast notes with the left hand, which walks quietly below.
The fugue begins with the theme in a single voice. Remember its bouncing, dotted rhythm.
Listen as the theme enters in the second, third and fourth voices, and the sound becomes grand.

In 1720, Bach began a notebook called the Clavier-Büchlein for his nine-year-old son Friedemann. It contains early versions of 11 preludes from Book 1, and this D major prelude is one of them. However, it is not finished there.

The German word 'wohltemperiert' means 'well tuned', and it does not necessarily mean the equal temperament used on pianos today. Many scholars think it means a tuning in which every key sounds good, and the exact tuning is still debated. The Japanese title is actually a free translation.

The title page of Book 1 says that the music is for the use of young musicians who want to learn, and also for the enjoyment of those who are already skilled. It is both a textbook and a treat for experts.

In the prelude, the right hand keeps playing similar fast patterns. Playing them evenly and accurately is useful practice for finger control and for balancing the two hands. No wonder an early version appeared in a notebook for Bach's son.
