This concerto is for two solo violins with strings and continuo. The two violins are equal partners; neither one is the star. They chase the same melody and weave around each other, as if they were having a conversation. It has three movements: fast, slow, fast.
Based on the surviving parts, it was probably performed in Leipzig around 1730, though some think it was written earlier, in Köthen. Bach later turned it into a concerto for two harpsichords in C minor (BWV 1062). Remaking a favorite piece for other instruments was something Bach often did.
The second movement is especially famous for the way the two violins sing gently to each other. There are many great recordings, including duets by father and son, David and Igor Oistrakh, and by Yehudi Menuhin and his teacher George Enescu. The piece is also in the books of the Suzuki Method, which began in Japan, so students all over the world play it.
This piece is for two violins and strings. The two violins are like two friends. They talk and play together. The slow part in the middle is very beautiful. Many young violin students play it.

Because the two players must breathe together, this piece is often played by pairs with a special bond. The great Soviet violinist David Oistrakh recorded it with his son Igor, and the American Yehudi Menuhin recorded it as a boy with his teacher George Enescu. It is fun to compare how the two sounds blend.
Bach rewrote this piece as the Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C minor (BWV 1062). He lowered the key by one step and rewrote the violin lines for keyboard. In Leipzig, he probably often played keyboard concertos with his sons and students.
The Suzuki Method, started in Japan by Shinichi Suzuki, is a way of teaching violin used all over the world. Its books include the first movement of this concerto. Students can share the two parts with a teacher or friend, so it is a perfect piece for learning the joy of playing together.
We usually think of Bach as an organist, but as a young man he also worked as a violinist at the court in Weimar. His son Carl Philipp Emanuel wrote that his father liked to play the viola when making music with others. He knew string instruments well, and it shows in this piece.
