Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major is one of the six concertos dedicated in 1721. The soloists are one violin and two flutes, supported by strings and continuo. In the first movement, the two flutes trade sunny, peaceful melodies, like a walk in a spring meadow. The whole piece has three movements: fast, slow, fast.
Bach called the two flutes 'fiauti d'echo', or 'echo flutes'. Nobody knows for sure what instrument this means. Many think it simply means recorders, but others believe it means recorders of a special size, or a way of playing so that they sound like a distant echo. So different performances use different instruments and sound a little different.
In the third movement, the violin plays dazzlingly fast notes and nearly steals the lead role. Later, Bach rewrote this piece as a concerto in F major for harpsichord and two recorders (BWV 1057). Using the same music again with different instruments was something Bach often did.
This piece has three solo instruments: one violin and two flutes. The flutes play happy, gentle music. Then the violin plays very fast notes. No one knows for sure what kind of flutes Bach wanted. It is still a mystery!
In the second movement, loud and soft passages take turns, as the flutes softly repeat phrases after the orchestra. It sounds like an echo in the mountains. Some people think the name 'echo flutes' has something to do with these soft repeats.
Because the two flutes stand out, No. 4 is often thought of as a flute concerto. But the violin part is very difficult, and in the first and third movements it shines with long runs of fast notes. It is a luxurious concerto in which the three soloists take turns being the star.
In the later harpsichord concerto version (BWV 1057), the difficult violin part was given to the harpsichord, and the key was lowered from G major to F major. Two recorders play the flute parts. It is thought to date from the late 1730s, when Bach reworked a group of concertos for harpsichord in Leipzig.
Bach's dedication to the Margrave was written in French, not German. Among German nobles at that time, French was considered the elegant language. The text is very polite, and Bach humbly asks the Margrave not to judge the imperfections of the works too strictly.
