The Badinerie is the short piece that ends Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor. In this suite, the flute takes the spotlight as a solo instrument, supported by strings and continuo, the bass line and chords that accompany. The Badinerie is a fast, cheerful piece in two beats, with the flute racing lightly through quick notes.
An orchestral suite begins with a French-style overture and continues with a series of dance pieces. No. 2 goes from the Overture to a Rondeau, Sarabande, Bourrée, Polonaise and Minuet, and finally the Badinerie. The surviving parts date from around 1738–39, when Bach was in Leipzig. However, some scholars think there was an earlier version for a different instrument and in a different key.
In Leipzig, Bach led the Collegium Musicum, a group of students and other musicians who gave concerts in a coffee house. This suite may have been played at events like these. Today the Badinerie is a classic showpiece for flutists and a popular encore. Some players take it at breathtaking speed, keeping their fingers and tongue very busy.
This is a short and fast piece. The flute plays many quick notes. It sounds happy and a little funny. The name means 'a joke' or 'playing around'. Flute players love to play it at concerts.

Some scholars think this suite was originally in A minor, with a solo violin instead of a flute. One reason is that parts of the flute line look as if they were written for violin. But no original score has been found, so nobody knows for sure.
The flute of Bach's time, the flauto traverso, was made of wood and usually had just one key. It did not have the many keys of a modern metal flute. Playing the fast Badinerie on it took real mastery. Today it is sometimes played on a wooden flute, with a soft, warm tone.
The Badinerie is in B minor, a minor key. Minor keys often sound sad, but this piece sounds very merry. It is a great example of how a fast tempo and a bouncy rhythm can make even a minor key exciting.
The other pieces in the suite have dance names, like bourrée and minuet. But 'badinerie' is not a type of dance. It describes a mood, like teasing or joking. After a row of proper dances, the suite ends with a light joke, which is a stylish way to finish.
