The Art of Fugue is a work Bach worked on during roughly the last ten years of his life. From a single theme in D minor, he made 14 fugues and four canons, turning the theme upside down, changing its speed and combining it with other themes. It is a collection that explores the art of the fugue to its limits.
The score does not say which instrument should play it. Each voice is written on its own staff, so it is sometimes performed by an orchestra or a string quartet. But almost all of it fits under two hands, so many scholars think it was meant for keyboard. An autograph score from the early 1740s survives.
Bach was preparing it for publication, but he died in 1750 before it appeared in print. The last fugue breaks off, and scholars still debate why it is unfinished. It was published the next year, in 1751, but it hardly sold, and later his son Carl Philipp Emanuel offered the copper printing plates for sale. Still, from the 19th century on, the collection has been studied as a treasure house of musical wisdom.
This is one of Bach's last major works. It uses one melody again and again in many ways. The last fugue is not finished. It stops suddenly in the middle! Bach also hid his own name in the music.

In German note names, B means B-flat, A is A, C is C, and H is B-natural. In the unfinished final fugue, these four notes, B-A-C-H, appear as the third theme. The composer wrote his own name into the music like a signature.
On the score of the unfinished fugue, Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel wrote that the composer died at the point where the name BACH appears in the countersubject. But studies of the handwriting suggest that this part was written earlier, so his note is not thought to be literally true.
The score published in 1751 hardly sold. When Carl Philipp Emanuel offered the copper plates for sale in 1756, it is said that only about 30 copies had been sold. A collection now called one of the greatest in music history got very little attention in its time.
At the end of the published score, an organ chorale, a piece based on a hymn, was added. The preface says that Bach, who had lost his sight, dictated it to a friend. Today, however, scholars do not accept this story as fact, and they think the piece is a revision of an earlier chorale prelude.
