English
As Japan began recording temperatures above 40°C almost every year, the agency decided to give such days a name. From February 27 to March 29, 2026, it ran an online survey with 13 options. Out of about 478,000 responses, "kokushobi" won with about 203,000 votes. It became official on April 17.
English
The new word was used often that summer. The Tokai region had five 40°C days in a row from July 21 to 25, a first in Japan. Kyushu hit 40°C for the first time on record, and Fukuoka reached 40.4°C on August 26. By the end of August, there were 36 such cases, the most since 2010.
English
That summer, the term appeared again and again in forecasts and heatstroke warnings. It also gave people a clear signal to rethink outdoor activities. Eastern Japan had heavy rain in the same season, adding to a summer of extreme weather. The word became a reminder of dangerous heat and a changing climate.
