Should astronomers focus on our own solar system rather than on distant stars and galaxies?

I disagree with the idea that astronomers should concentrate only on our solar system. First, many of the biggest questions about our existence can only be answered by looking far away. The Sun and its planets formed from gas and dust that had been enriched by earlier generations of stars, some of which ended their lives as supernovae. To understand how our solar system was born, we must study how stars live and die across the galaxy. Second, distant objects reveal the history of the entire universe. Because light takes time to travel, looking at a galaxy billions of light-years away shows us how it looked billions of years ago. Observations like these have shown that the universe is expanding and have revealed its approximate age. Of course, studying nearby planets and asteroids is also valuable, especially for protecting Earth. However, a balanced approach that covers both near and far will teach us the most.

No, I do not think so. First, to know how the Sun and Earth were born, we must study other stars. Some materials in our solar system came from old stars that exploded. Second, light from faraway galaxies is very old, so it shows us the past of the universe. This helps us learn how old the universe is. We should study both near and far space.

  • Planets and asteroids in our solar system can be visited by spacecraft, so research on them produces more direct and reliable results.
  • Studying nearby objects has practical benefits, such as finding dangerous asteroids and preparing for future human missions.
