Is astronomy relevant to the daily lives of ordinary people?

Many people think astronomy has nothing to do with their daily lives, but I believe it is more relevant than it seems. For one thing, our everyday routines are built on astronomy. Calendars, the length of a day and the timing of seasons all come from centuries of watching the Sun, the Moon and the stars. Today, astronomers and space scientists also monitor solar storms that can affect the power supplies and communications we rely on. For another, astronomy shapes the way we think about ourselves. Much of the calcium in our bones and the iron in our blood was made inside stars long before Earth existed. Learning this can give people a sense of connection to the universe. Similarly, the famous photograph of Earth as a tiny pale blue dot, taken by Voyager 1 in 1990, has encouraged many people to value our fragile planet. In short, astronomy touches both our practical lives and our hearts.

Yes, I think it is. First, calendars and seasons come from watching the Sun and the Moon. We use them every day. Second, astronomy changes how we see ourselves. The iron in our blood was made inside stars long ago. A photo of Earth taken by Voyager 1 shows that our planet is small and special. So astronomy is closer to us than we think.

  • Most people never use astronomical knowledge at work or at home, and they can live perfectly well without it.
  • Practical subjects such as medicine and engineering have a much more direct effect on daily life than the study of distant stars.
