People often talk about sleep, food and exercise as the big three habits for a healthy mind. This study looked at two more things. One was feeling connected to other people. The other was mindfulness, or paying attention to what is happening now.
Teens with more of these good habits often felt better at later checks. They also felt less stressed and worried. This was true even after the researchers took the teens' earlier mental health into account.
The good habits often came together. Teens with one good habit were more likely to have others too. The study shows a link, but it does not prove that the habits made the teens feel better. It was published in the Journal of Adolescence.

One was feeling connected to other people.(1つは、ほかの人とつながっていると感じることだった)や paying attention to what is happening now(いま起きていることに注意を向けること)がその例。
- My hobby is taking pictures.
- Getting enough sleep is important.

Teenagers who had more healthy habits and personal strengths reported better well-being years later, according to a study from Australia. Researchers at the Thompson Institute of the University of the Sunshine Coast published the work in the Journal of Adolescence, and the university announced it on October 13.
The team used data from the Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study, which has followed the same group of young people for up to five years. The participants, who were 12 to 17 years old, had brain scans and thinking tests. They also answered questions about their mental health and daily life.
Sleep, diet and exercise are often called the big three for mental health. The researchers wanted to see whether other factors also mattered. They added social connectedness, or how close young people feel to others, and mindfulness, which means being present and engaged in daily life.
Teens who had a greater number of these protective factors were more likely to report positive well-being and lower psychological distress at later checks. The link remained even after the team took the teens' earlier mental health into account. The factors also tended to cluster, so a teen with one strength often had others.
The study was observational, so it shows an association rather than proof that the habits caused better well-being. The participants also came from one region of Australia. In a 2024 study of 103 young teens from the same project, the team found that social connectedness was the strongest predictor of both distress and well-being.

Teens who had a greater number of these protective factors were more likely to ...
- Students who sleep well often do better on tests.
- The girl who is talking to Ken is my sister.
