Beyond Sleep, Diet and Exercise, Teen Well-Being Builds Up
1Teenagers who had more healthy habits and personal strengths reported better well-being years later, according to a study from Australia. Researchers at the Thompson Institute of the University of the Sunshine Coast published the work in the Journal of Adolescence, and the university announced it on October 13.
2The team used data from the Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study, which has followed the same group of young people for up to five years. The participants, who were 12 to 17 years old, had brain scans and thinking tests. They also answered questions about their mental health and daily life.
3Sleep, diet and exercise are often called the big three for mental health. The researchers wanted to see whether other factors also mattered. They added social connectedness, or how close young people feel to others, and mindfulness, which means being present and engaged in daily life.
4Teens who had a greater number of these protective factors were more likely to report positive well-being and lower psychological distress at later checks. The link remained even after the team took the teens' earlier mental health into account. The factors also tended to cluster, so a teen with one strength often had others.
5The study was observational, so it shows an association rather than proof that the habits caused better well-being. The participants also came from one region of Australia. In a 2024 study of 103 young teens from the same project, the team found that social connectedness was the strongest predictor of both distress and well-being.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 who(~する人)
Teens who had a greater number of these protective factors were more likely to ...
