This is the overture to Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" (The Marksman), first performed in Berlin in 1821. The story is set in a forest in Bohemia shortly after the Thirty Years' War, and the overture includes many important melodies from the opera. Even if you have never seen the opera, it is a concert favorite that packs the story's light and darkness into one piece.
The hero, a young hunter named Max, must pass a traditional trial shot, or he cannot marry Agathe, the woman he loves. In despair, Max tries to get "magic bullets" made with the devil's help. Six of the seven bullets will hit whatever the shooter wants, but the devil decides where the last one goes. The dark sounds of the overture show this evil presence.
The premiere at the Royal Theater in Berlin on June 18, 1821, was a huge success. Painting the world of German forests and folk tales, the work is called the starting point of German Romantic opera, and it greatly influenced Wagner. The "Huntsmen's Chorus" sung in the opera is also very famous.
This music opens an opera about a young hunter. He must pass a shooting test. He tries to get magic bullets with help from an evil spirit. Near the start, four horns play like a song in the forest. Then the music gets dark and scary.

The famous scene in the opera is the making of the magic bullets in the Wolf's Glen at midnight. Six of the seven bullets go where the shooter wishes, but the devil Samiel decides where the seventh one goes. This frightening deal leads to the great climax. The eerie sounds of the Wolf's Glen also appear in the overture.
In the slow opening of the overture, four horns play gentle, hymn-like chords. This sound, which brings to mind a deep German forest, is one of the most famous horn passages in orchestral music.
Weber died in London in 1826, where he had gone to present an opera, and he was buried there. Eighteen years later, in 1844, thanks to the efforts of Wagner and others who admired him, his remains were moved to Dresden, and Wagner gave a speech in his honor.
After the successful premiere, melodies such as the "Bridal Wreath" song are said to have been hummed all over town. In Berlin, the opera was seen as a victory for German opera over the Italian and French operas that were popular at the time.
