Summer' is the second concerto of The Four Seasons, and it is written in G minor, a rather dark key. The first movement begins with people and animals worn out under the burning sun. Then we hear a cuckoo, a turtledove and a goldfinch, until a cold north wind blows and the shepherd fears a coming storm.
In the second movement, the tired shepherd tries to rest, but flies and gnats buzz around him and thunder rumbles in the distance, so he cannot relax. Between the quiet solo phrases, the orchestra adds low, threatening thunder. These details follow the sonnet that comes with the music.
In the third movement, the storm finally breaks. Thunder roars and hail falls, flattening the ripe grain. The violins' fierce, rapid notes are still thrilling to hear today. This dramatic movement is one of the most thrilling parts of The Four Seasons.
This piece is about summer. It is very hot, and people and animals are tired. Then a strong wind blows. In the last part, a big storm comes. The violins play very fast, like rain and thunder.

In the first movement, the solo violin imitates three birds one after another: a cuckoo, a turtledove and a goldfinch. Each bird's name is written in the score. In the heavy, tired air of summer, only the birds sound lively. It is a memorable scene.
The poem for the second movement says that flies and gnats buzz around so the shepherd cannot rest. He wants to sleep but cannot, and he is afraid of the distant thunder. Vivaldi even turns the unpleasant side of summer into music, which makes it fun.
Of the four concertos, only 'Summer' and 'Winter' are in minor keys, which sound a little dark. We often think of summer as a bright season, but Vivaldi showed the pain of the heat and the fear of storms. His focus on the hard side of the season feels very real.
The 1989 recording of The Four Seasons by the British violinist Nigel Kennedy is said to have sold in record numbers for a classical album. It reached many people who had never listened to classical music before. The Four Seasons has been recorded hundreds of times.
