Winter' is the last concerto of The Four Seasons, written in F minor. The first movement shows people shivering in the freezing snow and icy wind. The strings' trembling notes are bodies shaking with cold, and the solo violin's wild notes are the howling wind. Even stamping feet and chattering teeth are shown in sound. Just listening makes you want to hunch your shoulders.
The second movement changes completely: people sit quietly by a warm fire. The solo violin sings a beautiful melody, while the other violins pluck their strings, called pizzicato, to show the rain falling outside. The contrast between the cold outside and the warmth inside is wonderful. It is loved as one of the most beautiful melodies in The Four Seasons.
In the third movement, people walk nervously on the icy road, slip and fall, then get up and run again. Soon the ice cracks, and the south wind battles the north wind. The poem ends, 'This is winter, but it also brings its own joys,' and so The Four Seasons comes to a close. The year-long journey that began with spring ends here.
This piece is about winter. It is very cold, and people's teeth chatter. In the slow part, people sit by a warm fire. Outside, the rain falls. In the last part, people walk on ice and fall down!

The poem for the first movement mentions teeth chattering in the cold. The passage where the solo violin repeats the same note very quickly is thought to show this. It is Vivaldi's clever way to make you feel the cold in your body through music.
'Winter' is full of hard scenes: cold, ice and strong winds. But the sonnet ends with the words, 'This is winter, but it also brings joys like these.' The warmth of the fire and fun on the ice are pleasures only winter can give. It is a positive ending that celebrates the whole season.
Late in life, Vivaldi moved to Vienna looking for work, but he died there in 1741 and was buried simply in a cemetery owned by the city hospital. After his death, his fame faded greatly. In 1926, a large collection of his manuscripts was found at a school in northern Italy and later went to a library in Turin. Discoveries like this led to his revival in the 20th century.
In Japan, a Baroque music boom took place in the 1960s and 1970s. The huge success of the Italian ensemble I Musici's recording of The Four Seasons is said to be one of the things that started it. Even today, The Four Seasons is one of the most popular classical works in Japan.
