In 1811, the German composer Carl Maria von Weber wrote this concerto for Heinrich Baermann, a star clarinetist in Munich. It has three movements in which the solo clarinet and the orchestra talk back and forth. The first movement is dark and dramatic, the second sings, and the third is cheerful and lively.
That year in Munich, Weber wrote a Concertino for Baermann, and it was a great success. King Maximilian I of Bavaria heard it and was so impressed that he ordered two more clarinet concertos. That is how this Concerto No. 1 and Concerto No. 2 were born.
Concerto No. 1 was first performed in Munich in June 1811, with Baermann as soloist. Weber and Baermann became close friends, and Weber also wrote other works for him, such as a Clarinet Quintet. Along with Mozart's concerto, it is still one of the most important pieces for clarinetists.
Weber wrote this concerto for a great clarinet player. A king heard another clarinet piece by Weber and loved it. So the king asked Weber for two concertos. The first part is dark and dramatic. The last part is happy and fun.

When Weber's Concertino for Baermann was performed in April 1811, the King of Bavaria liked it so much that he ordered two clarinet concertos. Weber wrote and premiered both of them within the same year.
In the middle of the second movement, the orchestra falls silent, and only three horns play soft chords with the clarinet. It sounds like a choir singing deep in a forest. It is a very Weber-like moment; he later gave the horns a starring role in his opera "Der Freischütz," too.
Weber and Baermann were such good friends that they went on concert tours together. Besides this concerto, Weber wrote many works for Baermann, including the Concertino, Concerto No. 2 and the Clarinet Quintet.
The clarinet has different colors in different ranges: its low notes are thick and dark, and its high notes are bright and shining. Weber boldly used these contrasts and wrote passages that leap from the bottom to the top. They were perfect for showing off Baermann's skill.
