The Flying Dutchman is an opera that Wagner began planning in 1840 and composed in 1841. It is based on the legend of a ghost-ship captain, the Dutchman, who is cursed to sail the seas forever. He can only be saved by a woman who will love him faithfully until death. The overture sums up the whole story in stormy music.
The music comes from Wagner's own experience. In 1839, he secretly left Riga, in today's Latvia, with his wife to escape his debts. They travelled overland to the port of Pillau and boarded a small ship bound for London. A terrible storm hit, and the ship took shelter in a Norwegian fjord. It is said that the shouts of the sailors there gave him ideas for the sailors' songs in the opera.
The opera was first performed in Dresden on 2 January 1843, with Wagner conducting. In the overture, we hear the Dutchman's theme on the horns, the music of the storm, and the gentle 'redemption' melody sung by the heroine, Senta. In 1860, Wagner rewrote the end of the overture and added a calmer ending that suggests salvation.
This music tells a story about a ghost ship. The captain must sail the sea forever. At the start, the horns play a loud call, and a big storm begins. Wagner was really in a storm at sea once! He used that scary trip in this music.

Wagner was very poor in Paris. In 1841 he sold the outline of the story to the Paris Opéra for 500 francs. The Opéra gave it to another composer, Pierre-Louis Dietsch, whose opera The Phantom Ship was staged in 1842. Wagner did not give up and finished the work with his own music.
The Flying Dutchman is an old sailors' legend, but Wagner's main source was an episode in a work by the poet Heinrich Heine, 'The Memoirs of Herr von Schnabelewopski'. The idea that the Dutchman is saved by a faithful woman comes from Heine's story.
Wagner first set the opera in Scotland, but before the premiere he moved it to Norway. Perhaps his memory of hiding from the storm in a Norwegian fjord was too strong to forget.
Wagner later wrote that he composed 'Senta's Ballad', in which Senta sings the legend of the Dutchman, first, and that the whole opera grew from it. Both the Dutchman's theme and the redemption theme from the overture can be found in this ballad.
