歌劇『リゴレット』より 四重唱「美しい恋の乙女よ」

『リゴレット』は、ヴェルディが1851年に初演したオペラで、ヴィクトル・ユーゴーの劇『王は楽しむ』がもとになっています。主人公リゴレットは、遊び好きでわがままなマントヴァ公爵に仕える道化師。大切なひとり娘ジルダが公爵にだまされたことを知り、仕返しをくわだてます。この四重唱は、第3幕の有名な場面です。Rigoletto is an opera by Verdi that premiered in 1851, based on Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse ('The King Amuses Himself'). The hero, Rigoletto, is a jester who serves the selfish, pleasure-loving Duke of Mantua. When he learns that the Duke has deceived his beloved only daughter, Gilda, he plans revenge. This quartet is a famous scene in Act 3.

場所は町はずれのさびしい宿屋。中では公爵が、宿屋の主人の妹マッダレーナを甘い言葉で口説いていて、マッダレーナはそれを笑ってかわします。外では、かべのすきまからのぞいたジルダが、愛する人の裏切りに胸を痛めて泣き、リゴレットは娘をなぐさめながら仕返しをちかいます。4人がまったくちがう気持ちを、同時にひとつの音楽として歌うのです。The scene is a lonely inn at the edge of town. Inside, the Duke is sweet-talking Maddalena, the innkeeper's sister, and she laughs at his words. Outside, Gilda watches through a crack in the wall. She weeps at the betrayal of the man she loves, while Rigoletto comforts her and swears revenge. The four sing completely different feelings at the same time, in one piece of music.

お芝居では、4人が同時にしゃべると、何を言っているのかわかりません。でも音楽なら、4つの声がからみ合いながら、それぞれの気持ちをはっきり伝えられます。この四重唱は、オペラだからこそできる表現の代表として知られています。オペラの初演は1851年3月11日、ヴェネツィアのフェニーチェ劇場で、大成功をおさめました。In a play, if four people talk at once, nobody can understand them. In music, however, four voices can weave together and still show each person's feelings clearly. This quartet is known as a perfect example of what only opera can do. The opera was premiered at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851 and was a great success.
