Verdi's Requiem is a Catholic mass that prays for the dead. It is a huge work for four solo singers, a large chorus and a large orchestra, and it was completed in 1874. 'Dies irae' is one part of it. It sings about the terror of Judgment Day, when the world comes to an end. The screaming chorus and the thunder-like bass drum grab the listener's heart.
It began with the death of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian writer whom Verdi deeply admired. Manzoni died on 22 May 1873, and Verdi decided to write a Requiem for him. A few years earlier, after the death of the composer Rossini, Verdi had planned a Requiem written by many composers together, and he had written its last part, the 'Libera me'. That music was revised and reused in this Requiem.
The premiere took place on 22 May 1874, exactly one year after Manzoni's death, at the church of San Marco in Milan, with Verdi conducting. Although it is church music, its emotions shift dramatically, like those in an opera, and the conductor Hans von Bülow mocked it as 'an opera in ecclesiastical garb'. Still, it became a big hit in concert halls and is now performed all over the world.
This is music about the end of the world. A big choir shouts, and a huge drum goes BOOM! It is part of a Requiem, music for people who have died. Verdi wrote it for a writer he loved. It sounds very scary and very exciting.

The Requiem for Rossini was finished by 13 composers working together. But the premiere planned for 1869 was cancelled just before it happened. This lost work was finally performed in 1988, about 120 years later.
The bass drum is one of the stars of the 'Dies irae'. The score simply asks for a normal bass drum, but some orchestras are said to use an extra-large one for more power. Its BOOMs, struck on the off-beats, seem to shake the whole hall.
Bülow, who had mocked the work as 'an opera in ecclesiastical garb', later changed his mind. In 1892 he is said to have written Verdi a letter of apology, and Verdi answered him warmly and generously.
The words of the 'Dies irae' have a famous medieval chant melody, and many composers, such as Berlioz and Rachmaninoff, quoted it in their music. Verdi did not use that old tune. Instead, he wrote completely new, storm-like music.
