The Drinking Song is a duet from Act 1 of Verdi's opera La traviata. At a party in Paris, a young man named Alfredo raises his glass and starts to sing. The hostess, Violetta, answers him. The chorus joins in, and everyone sings about drinking and enjoying life, all in a light, swinging three-beat rhythm.
The story comes from the novel La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils. Violetta is a star of Paris society, but she is seriously ill. The bright, happy toast is a sharp contrast to the sad ending that is coming. Verdi knew that a joyful scene can make the later tragedy feel even stronger.
The first performance, at La Fenice in Venice in March 1853, was a failure. But the next year, a revised production at another theater was a great success. Today La traviata is one of the most often performed operas in the world. Even people who never go to the opera know this tune, and singers often perform it as an encore.
This is a song for a party. A young man lifts his glass and sings. A woman sings back to him. Everyone sings, "Let's drink and be happy!" The first show was a failure, but now the opera is loved all over the world.
The day after the premiere, Verdi wrote to a friend: La traviata was a failure last night. Was it my fault or the singers'? Time will tell. And time did tell. Today it is one of the best-loved operas of all.
The Italian title, La traviata, means "the woman who went astray." The Japanese title, Tsubaki-hime, or "Camellia Princess," comes from the name of the novel. In English-speaking countries, people usually just say La traviata.
At the time, operas were usually set safely in the past, but Verdi wanted La traviata to be a story of his own time. But at the first performance, partly because of the rules of the theater and censors, it is said the setting was moved back more than a hundred years.
Only about seven weeks before La traviata opened, Verdi had a big success in Rome with another opera, Il trovatore. So in less than one year, he gave the world two operas that are still performed everywhere today. He was at the top of his game.
