The Story

The Anvil Chorus opens Act 2 of Verdi's opera Il trovatore. The scene is a camp in the mountains of Spain. As the sun rises, a group of Roma people (often called gypsies in old books) strike their anvils with hammers. They sing loudly about work, wine and love.

The most special thing about this piece is that the score asks for anvils as instruments. Percussion players hit real anvils, or pieces of metal that sound like them, with hammers. The clang of metal and the voices of the chorus fit together, and you can almost feel the heat of a blacksmith's shop.

Il trovatore opened at the Teatro Apollo in Rome in January 1853 and was a big success. La traviata followed that same spring, so this was a very strong time in Verdi's career. Today the Anvil Chorus is often played on its own by orchestras and concert bands.

This is a strong song for many singers. It is morning in the mountains of Spain. People hit metal with big hammers. Clang, clang! The music uses real metal blocks called anvils.

Surprising Facts

An anvil is the heavy iron block that a blacksmith uses to hammer hot metal. In this chorus, the anvil is written into the score as an instrument. Real anvils are very heavy, so concerts often use metal bars or plates that make a similar sound.

Il trovatore is famous for being very hard to sing. There is a story that the great tenor Caruso said, "All you need for Trovatore is the four greatest singers in the world." No one knows for sure if he really said it, but it shows how difficult the roles are.

The plot of this opera has a swapped baby, brothers who are enemies, and many other twists. Some people joke that it is one of the most confusing stories in opera. But the music is so good that it is still performed all over the world.

In the American comedy film A Night at the Opera (1935), the Marx Brothers cause total chaos during a performance of Il trovatore. The joke works because so many people already knew this opera.
