喜歌劇「軽騎兵」序曲

オペレッタ「軽騎兵」は、物語も歌も今ではほとんど知られていません。ところが序曲だけは独立して演奏され続け、世界中のオーケストラや吹奏楽団の定番になりました。「序曲だけが有名」になった名曲の代表です。

Today almost no one knows the story or the songs of the operetta Light Cavalry. But the overture has been played on its own ever since, and it is a standard for orchestras and wind bands around the world. It is a classic example of an overture more famous than its opera.

序曲の始まりや途中のトランペットは、騎兵隊が使ったラッパの合図を思わせる書き方になっています。当時の聴衆にとって、軍隊のラッパは身近な音。聞いただけで「騎兵が来た！」とわかる仕かけです。

The trumpets at the start and in the middle are written to sound like the bugle calls used by cavalry. For audiences of that time, army bugles were a familiar sound, so they knew right away that the cavalry was coming.

スッペは、フランチェスコ・エゼキエーレ・エルメネジルドという長いイタリア語の名前で生まれました。古い伝記にはさらに長い「スッペ＝デメッリ」という名前ものっていますが、正確かどうかは疑われています。のちにウィーンで活躍し、ドイツ語風の名前「フランツ・フォン・スッペ」を名のりました。

Suppé was born with a long Italian name, Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Suppé. Old biographies make it even longer, 'Suppé-Demelli', but that may not be correct. Later he worked in Vienna and used the German-style name Franz von Suppé.

序曲の中ほどには、ハンガリー風の少し悲しげなメロディーが出てきます。軽騎兵（フサール）は、もともとハンガリーの騎兵がはじまり。勇ましいギャロップとの対比が、この序曲をあきさせない秘密です。

In the middle of the overture, a slightly sad Hungarian-style melody appears. The light cavalry soldiers called hussars first came from Hungary. The contrast between this melody and the brave gallop keeps the overture exciting.
