The Story

The Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka is a fast polka, a bouncy dance in two beats, that Johann Strauss II wrote in 1858. 'Tritsch-Tratsch' means 'chit-chat' or 'gossip'. Its quick, busy notes sound like voices chattering without a pause. It lasts only about three minutes, a short and lively piece.

That summer, Strauss had spent a very successful concert season in Pavlovsk, near Saint Petersburg in Russia. He presented this polka after returning to Vienna. Some say the title may refer to Der Tritschtratsch, a comic play by the Austrian writer Johann Nestroy, first staged in 1833.

It was first performed at a concert in Vienna on 24 November 1858. Its quick, chattering rhythm, like people talking nonstop, was great fun, and it soon became a hit. Today it is often played at concerts such as the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert, and it is sometimes sung by choirs with words.

This is a very fast and happy polka. 'Tritsch-tratsch' means 'chit-chat' in German. The music sounds like people talking very fast. It is only about three minutes long. It is great music for a fun day!

The title is said to poke gentle fun at the Viennese taste for gossip. Strauss turned nonstop chatter into music full of busy, quick notes. If you listen closely, you can almost hear people talking everywhere.

From 1856, Strauss spent many summers giving concerts in Pavlovsk, Russia. A railway company invited him to bring visitors to the concert hall at its station. Strauss was a big star in Russia too, and this polka was born after one of those great seasons.

The Hungarian-born pianist György Cziffra made a dazzling solo piano version of this polka. Popular pianists such as Yuja Wang still play it, often as an encore, and audiences love it.

Johann Strauss II's father, Johann Strauss I, was also a famous composer, known for the Radetzky March. His brothers Josef and Eduard were composers and conductors too. The Strauss family orchestra was a must at Vienna's balls.
