The Radetzky March was written in 1848 by Johann Strauss I, the father of Johann Strauss II, the "Waltz King." With its bouncing rhythm and catchy tune, it is by far the most famous of the many works Strauss I wrote.
The title refers to Joseph Radetzky, an Austrian field marshal. The march was written in 1848 to honor his victory in a battle in northern Italy, and it was first performed in Vienna in August that year. It was a time of great change, with revolutions breaking out across Europe.
Today it is best known from the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert on January 1. It is played as the very last piece, and the whole audience claps along, following the conductor's signals. Because the concert is broadcast around the world, many people think of it as the sound of the New Year.
This is a happy march. It is the last piece at a famous New Year's concert in Vienna. Everyone in the hall claps along! The father of the Waltz King wrote it. It is named after a general.

The two best-known composers named Johann Strauss were father and son. The Blue Danube is by the son, Johann II, but the Radetzky March is by the father, Johann I. It is said the father did not want his son to become a musician, and when the son made his debut, father and son became rivals.
At the New Year's Concert, the conductor turns toward the audience and directs the clapping, making it louder, softer, or stopping it. Every year, a famous conductor shows his or her own playful way of conducting the crowd.
For many years, the Vienna Philharmonic used a version based on Leopold Weninger's 1914 arrangement, changed little by little by its players. Weninger's later membership in the Nazi Party also drew attention, and in 2019 the orchestra made its own new edition, first used at the 2020 New Year's Concert.
In 1932, the Austrian writer Joseph Roth published a novel called The Radetzky March. It tells the story of the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the march appears as a symbol of the old empire.
