The Story

The Blue Danube is a waltz written in 1867 by Johann Strauss II, the "Waltz King." It celebrates the river Danube, which flows through Vienna. In Austria it is so loved that it is called the country's unofficial second anthem. It begins with a soft shimmer in the strings, and then a chain of waltzes flows on like the river.

It was first written as a piece for the Vienna Men's Choral Association. Austria had just lost a war, and the mood was gloomy. The first words were humorous, poking fun at the times. The title comes from a line in a poem by Karl Isidor Beck: "by the beautiful blue Danube."

After its first performance with chorus in Vienna in February 1867, the orchestral version was played at the Paris World's Fair that same year and became a huge hit. Today it is a regular encore at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert every January 1. It is also famous for the spaceship scenes in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This is a famous waltz from Vienna. It is about a big river called the Danube. At first, it was a song for a choir. Now people in Austria love it like a national song. It was used in a space movie, too!

Listening Guide

At the start, the strings shimmer softly like ripples, and the horn plays a gentle melody. It feels like a river in the morning mist.
Listen for the famous main waltz starting over the "oom-pah-pah" rhythm. Try to feel the Viennese style, where the second beat comes a little early.
Several waltzes follow one after another, and the piece ends with a big, lively finish. Try counting how many different tunes you hear.
A regular encore at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert, and used in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Brahms was a good friend of Strauss. The story goes that when a woman of the Strauss family asked him to sign her fan, he wrote the first bars of this waltz and added, "Unfortunately not by Johannes Brahms." What a compliment!

Some say the first choral performance was a flop, but it seems it simply got a polite welcome. The real breakthrough came when the orchestral version was played at the Paris World's Fair that year. From there, it became a worldwide hit.

At the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert, when this waltz begins as an encore, the audience starts clapping after just a few notes. The music stops, the orchestra wishes everyone a happy new year, and then they start again. It happens every year.

In Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, this waltz plays as spaceships and a space station slowly turn and float. Music from 19th-century Viennese ballrooms becomes a ballet in space.
