The Thunderer is a march written in 1889 by Sousa, America's March King. At the time, Sousa was the leader of the United States Marine Band. With its crisp, bright melodies and powerful sound that rumbles like thunder, it is one of Sousa's most famous marches.
The march is dedicated to Columbia Commandery No. 2 of the Knights Templar in Washington, D.C., a fraternal group connected with the Freemasons. Sousa had joined it around 1886. In October 1889, the group's national gathering was held in Washington, and the march was written for that event.
Sousa never clearly explained who the Thunderer was. One idea is that it refers to Myron M. Parker, a fellow member who worked hard to organize the gathering. Another idea is that it came from 'The Thunderer,' a nickname for the London newspaper The Times. The truth remains a mystery.
This is a strong march from America. The composer was the leader of a famous band. He wrote it for a big meeting in Washington. Its name means 'the person who makes thunder.' Nobody knows who the Thunderer was.

No one knows for sure who the Thunderer in the title was. Researchers think it may have been Myron M. Parker, a member who organized the gathering. Sousa's daughter Helen suggested it might have come from 'The Thunderer,' a nickname for The Times of London.
In 1889, besides The Thunderer, Sousa also wrote The Washington Post, a march for a newspaper. Both are still played all over the world. That year, Sousa was truly at the top of his game.
From 1880 to 1892, Sousa led the United States Marine Band, which plays at events for the President. The Thunderer comes from those years. Later, he formed his own Sousa Band and toured around the world.
The Knights Templar group the march was dedicated to was connected with the Freemasons, and Sousa himself was a member. The March King put all his skill into this piece to make his fellow members' big gathering exciting.
