キング・コットン

「キング・コットン」は、19世紀のアメリカ南部で、綿花が経済の中心だったことを表す言葉でした。ただ、南北戦争の前は、その綿花づくりを奴隷にされた人々の労働がささえていたという、つらい歴史もあります。マーチの題名には、そんな時代の言葉が使われているのです。

'King Cotton' was a phrase used in the 19th-century American South to show that cotton was the center of the economy. Before the Civil War, cotton farming depended on the work of enslaved people, which is a painful part of that history. The march title uses a phrase from that time.

1895年のアトランタの博覧会は、南北戦争から30年たった南部が、新しい産業を世界にアピールする場でした。スーザはこの博覧会のためにこの曲を書きました。大きなイベントのために、はなやかなマーチを書くのは、スーザの得意わざだったのです。

The 1895 Atlanta exposition, held 30 years after the Civil War, was a chance for the South to show its new industries to the world. Sousa wrote this march for the fair. Writing splendid marches for big events was one of his special talents.

映画『スティング』といえばジョプリンのラグタイムが有名ですが、じつはスーザのこの曲も、メリーゴーラウンドの音楽として映画の中で流れています。ただしサウンドトラック盤には入っていないので、気づかない人も多い「かくれ出演」なのです。

The Sting is famous for Joplin's ragtime, but this Sousa march is also heard in the film as carousel music. It is not on the soundtrack album, though, so many people miss this 'hidden appearance.'

この曲は、1986年の日本映画『子猫物語』の英語版『マイロとオーティスの冒険』でも、BGMとして使われました。また、アメリカのコメディ番組『30 ROCK／サーティー・ロック』にも登場します。100年以上前のマーチが、今も映像の世界で活躍しているのです。

This march is used as background music in The Adventures of Milo and Otis, the English version of the 1986 Japanese film Koneko Monogatari. It also appears in the American comedy show 30 Rock. A march from over 100 years ago is still busy on the screen.
