The Story

The Invincible Eagle is a march Sousa wrote in 1901. The bald eagle is the national bird and a symbol of the United States. Sousa wrote it for his band's performances at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, and dedicated it to the exposition. The John Church Company of Cincinnati published it the same year.

Sousa began writing it on an evening train from Buffalo to New York City, jotting down ideas in a pocket notebook. At first, he thought of calling it 'Spirit of Niagara,' after the nearby Niagara Falls. He believed the new march might become an even greater patriotic work than The Stars and Stripes Forever.

In the end, it did not become as famous as The Stars and Stripes Forever, but it is still a popular march today. Soon after the premiere, Sousa called it one of his 'sunshine marches.' He meant that it shows the bright, parade-like side of military life, not the hardship of war.

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States. Sousa wrote this march for a big fair in 1901. He started it on a train at night. He thought it might be better than his most famous march! The music is bright like the sun.

According to Blanche Duffield, a soprano with the Sousa Band, Sousa sat on the train tracing circles with a pencil and humming. Soon he was filling notebook pages with march music. The story appears in a book by the Sousa scholar Paul E. Bierley.

At first, Sousa thought this march might become a greater patriotic piece than The Stars and Stripes Forever. That did not happen, but he was proud enough of it to compare it with his biggest hit.

At the Pan-American Exposition, the band of Francesco Fanciulli, who had followed Sousa as leader of the Marine Band, also played. Fanciulli presented his own march, 'The Electric Century,' but it is Sousa's march that is still played today.

In 2020, the U.S. Space Force chose an excerpt of this march as its interim official march, an 'invincible eagle' flying into space. In September 2022, a newly written song, 'Semper Supra,' became the official service song and took over the role.
