The Moldau is the second of six symphonic poems in Má vlast ('My Homeland') by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. Moldau is the German name of a river in the Czech lands; in Czech it is called the Vltava. The music shows two small springs deep in the forest growing into a great river that flows to the capital, Prague.
At the time, the Czech lands were ruled by Austria, and people longed to feel pride in their own nation. In Má vlast, Smetana turned Czech nature, legends, and history into music. In The Moldau, we pass a hunt in the forest, a village wedding dance, water nymphs in the moonlight, and the St John's Rapids.
Smetana became completely deaf in the autumn of 1874, yet only weeks later he began this piece and finished it in about three weeks. It was premiered in Prague in April 1875 and was a great success. Today it is loved as a piece that feels like home to the Czech people.
This music is about a river in the Czech Republic. Two small springs start in a forest. They join and become a big river. The river flows to the city of Prague. The composer could not hear when he wrote this!

The Prague Spring music festival traditionally opens on May 12, the day Smetana died, with a performance of the whole Má vlast. The Moldau is a very special piece for the Czech people.
The famous Moldau melody is very similar to 'Hatikvah', the national anthem of Israel. Both are thought to come from the same family of old folk melodies that spread across Europe. Neither one simply copied the other.
At the start, the flutes play flowing figures for one spring. Then the clarinets come in to stand for the other. The two figures overlap as the warm spring and the cold spring join to form the Vltava.
In Japan, a choral song with Japanese words set to the Moldau melody, 'Morudau no nagare', has long been sung in junior high school music classes and choir contests. Many people learned the tune by singing it before hearing the orchestral piece.
