The Story

The Wild Rider' is No. 8 of Schumann's piano collection Album for the Young, Op. 68. Its German title, 'Wilder Reiter', means 'wild rider'. It is a short piece in A minor, and its bouncing rhythm brings to mind a child galloping around on horseback. It has long been a favorite of children learning the piano.

In 1848, Schumann put together a small book of easy piano pieces for the seventh birthday of his eldest daughter, Marie. This was the starting point: more and more pieces followed, and the collection grew to 43 pieces in all. The first part has easy pieces for younger children, and the second part has pieces for older ones. 'The Wild Rider' is one of the easy pieces in the first part.

The collection was published in December 1848 and quickly became popular. Many teaching pieces of the time focused mainly on finger practice, but Schumann packed rich musical joy into short pieces that children could play. Later, Tchaikovsky followed his example and wrote his own Album for the Young.

This is a short piano piece for children. It sounds like a child riding a horse very fast. The music jumps up and down like a running horse. Schumann made this music book for his daughter's birthday. Many children play it in piano lessons.

Listening Guide

In the first part, the right hand bounces along in a 'da-da, da-da' rhythm as the horse sets off.
In the bright middle part, the melody moves to the left hand. Listen for the gallop down low.
At the end, the first gallop returns. Notice the changes between loud and soft.

Surprising Facts

The collection began as a small handwritten book of pieces given to Schumann's eldest daughter, Marie, on her seventh birthday, 1 September 1848. Clara wrote about it in her diary. Music written for his own child became a book played by children all over the world.

In the sources, the title was once changed to 'Rocking-Horse Rider'. But in a letter to the publisher in October 1848, Schumann changed it back to 'Wilder Reiter' ('Wild Rider'). Still, it is fun to imagine a child playing on a rocking horse.

In the bright middle section, the galloping melody that the right hand has been playing moves to the left hand, while the right hand plays the chords. It is a clever little piece that teaches both hands to carry a melody.

Later editions of Album for the Young included Schumann's 'House and Life Rules for Musicians', a collection of short pieces of advice for young players, about how to practice and why it matters to listen to good music.
