The Story

Aufschwung' ('Soaring') is the second piece in Schumann's Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces), Op. 12, written in 1837. The set has eight pieces with titles such as 'In the Evening', 'Why?' and 'In the Night'. 'Aufschwung' is one of the most passionate of them. Powerful chords in F minor leap upward, as if the heart were racing into the sky.

Schumann believed he had two sides to his personality, and he gave them names: passionate, active Florestan and dreamy, quiet Eusebius. In the Fantasiestücke, the pieces are arranged as if these two take turns on stage. 'Aufschwung' is thought to show Florestan letting his feelings explode.

The set was dedicated to Anna Robena Laidlaw, an 18-year-old pianist from Scotland. In 1837, Schumann and Clara, already in love, became secretly engaged, even though Clara's father was against them. 'Aufschwung' is still a favorite in piano recitals, packing all of Schumann's youthful passion into one short piece.

This piano piece is very strong and exciting. Its name means 'flying up'. The music jumps and runs like an excited heart. Schumann had two sides: a wild side and a quiet side. This is his wild side!

Surprising Facts

Schumann was not only a composer but also a critic who founded a music magazine. In its articles, Florestan and Eusebius appear as characters who discuss music. Giving names to the two sides of his personality and putting them in both his writing and his music was very Schumann.

Robena Laidlaw, who received the dedication, was a young pianist from Scotland who met Schumann during her stay in Leipzig in 1837. She gave concerts there, and Schumann admired her playing. Thanks to this famous dedication, her name lives on in music history.

The first piece, 'In the Evening', is slow, dreamy and quiet. Right after it, 'Aufschwung' bursts in. From calm Eusebius to fiery Florestan: this order creates a dramatic contrast.

'Florestan' is also the name of the hero in Beethoven's opera Fidelio, and 'Eusebius' was the name of early saints. There is no clear record of where Schumann got the names, but the Fidelio connection is a popular theory.
