Scarlatti's Sonata in D minor, K. 141, is a one-movement harpsichord piece. Its most famous feature is the super-fast repeated notes that fill much of the piece. It is a quick Allegro in 3/8 time, written in two parts that are each repeated. Because it is so difficult and showy, it is sometimes called a toccata.
Scarlatti lived at the Spanish court for many years. The repeated notes, the fierce strummed chords and the syncopated rhythms of this piece remind us of the Spanish guitar and Spanish dance music. The hands also cross over each other, so it is fun to watch as well as hear. D minor was also Scarlatti's most-used minor key.
We do not know when it was written. It is said to survive not in the copies made for the queen but in other manuscripts, such as one owned by the English organist John Worgan. Since the 20th century, many pianists have played it, and Martha Argerich's encores of it are especially famous. It is sometimes arranged for guitar, too.
This piece is very fast. The same note comes again and again, like a drum roll. It sounds a little like a Spanish guitar. It is very hard to play! Famous pianists play it as an extra piece at the end of a concert.

Playing the same note at top speed while changing fingers is a very hard skill. You must stay relaxed and still be exact. Piano keys are heavier than harpsichord keys and work differently, so some players find it even harder on the piano.
People often say the repeated notes sound like a Spanish guitarist strumming or playing tremolo. Others think they copy the mandolin. Many of Scarlatti's sonatas suit the guitar, and a large number have been arranged for it.
The Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich often plays this piece as an encore, and live recordings of it exist. For her fans, it is a familiar sight to see her thrill the hall with lightning-fast repeated notes at the end of a concert.
This piece is said to be in a manuscript owned by John Worgan, an English organist who eagerly collected Scarlatti's music. In 18th-century England, Scarlatti had many fans, and his music was published there. Music from the Spanish court was loved across the sea.
