The Story

Le Piccadilly is a piano piece that Erik Satie wrote in 1904. Piccadilly is a busy street in London, and Piccadilly Circus is a famous road junction nearby. The piece is a bouncy march that borrows the rhythms of ragtime and the cakewalk, popular music and dance from America. It is so cheerful that it hardly sounds like the quiet Satie of the Gymnopédies.

Around this time, Satie made his living by playing the piano in Paris cabarets and writing light songs for singers. In his manuscript, the piece is called La Transatlantique, a teasing name for rich American women who crossed the Atlantic to find husbands in Europe. The new title probably came from a song he wrote at about the same time, La Diva de l'Empire, which mentions Piccadilly.

Some scholars think the tune is based on part of Hello! Ma Baby, an American hit song from 1899. Satie also arranged the piece for string orchestra, and both versions were published in 1907. Debussy wrote his piano piece Golliwogg's Cakewalk in 1908, so Satie was even earlier in taking an interest in American rhythms.

This is a happy piano march. Its name comes from a famous street in London. The rhythm jumps like American ragtime. Satie also wrote slow, quiet music, but this piece is fast and fun. He played the piano in cafés and cabarets in Paris to make money.

Feel the bouncy rhythm in the right hand, where the accents fall between the beats. This is called syncopation.

The title in the manuscript is La Transatlantique. It did not simply mean "crossing the Atlantic": it was a teasing name for rich American women who came to Europe. It was later changed to Piccadilly, a place in London. So a composer in Paris gave an American-style piece a British place name!

Scholars point out that the main tune is like the 'telephone' chorus of Hello! Ma Baby, a hit song from 1899. The singer Eugénie Fougère is said to have used this song when she showed Paris audiences the cakewalk on stage, and it was the talk of the town.

As a young man, Satie played the piano at Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat), a famous cabaret in Montmartre. Later he also earned money by accompanying singers and writing popular songs. Bright pieces like Le Piccadilly were born from this nighttime work in the city.

Debussy's Golliwogg's Cakewalk (1908) is a famous example of a classical composer using American music. But Satie had already written a cakewalk in 1900 (it was not published), and he wrote this piece in 1904. Satie was always quick to try new things.
