The Story

Havanaise" is a piece for violin and orchestra written by Saint-Saëns in 1887. The habanera is a dance with a special slow, swaying rhythm that spread from Havana, the capital of Cuba. Over this rhythm, the violin sings a lazy, sweet melody that sometimes bursts into passion.

The piece was dedicated to the Cuban-born violinist Rafael Díaz Albertini. Saint-Saëns went on a concert tour with him in 1885. It is said that on a cold, damp night in a hotel in Brest, in western France, the crackling of the fire gave him the idea for the main theme.

The version for violin and piano was finished first, in 1887, and the orchestral version came later. The same habanera rhythm is famous from the "Habanera" in Bizet's "Carmen." In 19th-century France, music with a Spanish or Latin American flavor was very popular. Today it is loved, together with the "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso," as one of Saint-Saëns's great violin pieces.

This is music for a violin and an orchestra. It uses a dance rhythm from Cuba. The violin sings a slow, sweet song. Sometimes the music gets very hot and fast. People say a crackling fire gave the composer the idea.

According to a book by the biographer Bonnerot, Saint-Saëns got the idea for the theme while listening to a crackling fire in a hotel in Brest during a concert tour. No one can prove it, but it is a romantic story.

The evening in Brest was in the autumn of 1885, but Saint-Saëns actually wrote the piece in the summer and autumn of 1887. He kept the idea in his heart for about two years before turning it into music.

Díaz Albertini, to whom the piece was dedicated, was born in Cuba. A piece built on the habanera, named after Havana, feels like a gift that reminds him of home. Saint-Saëns also wrote many violin works for other foreign masters, such as Sarasate.

Saint-Saëns loved to travel. He went to places like Algeria and Egypt many times, and he died in Algiers, Algeria. His interest in music from faraway places can be heard clearly in this "Havanaise."
