The Story

Danse macabre is an orchestral piece by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, written in 1874. It is a symphonic poem, a kind of music that tells a story with sound. At midnight, Death plays the violin, and skeletons climb out of their graves to dance. The music is spooky, but it is also a little funny: a waltz for the dead.

The piece is based on a poem by Henri Cazalis. Saint-Saëns first set the poem as a song for voice and piano, and later turned it into an orchestral work. The harp plays twelve notes for the clock striking midnight, and the dry clicking of the xylophone is often heard as rattling bones.

It was first performed in Paris in 1875. The great pianist Franz Liszt arranged it for solo piano. Saint-Saëns himself later borrowed the tune as a joke in 'Fossils', part of The Carnival of the Animals. Today it is a favorite at concerts around Halloween.

This music is about a night in a graveyard. At midnight, Death plays the violin. Skeletons get up and dance a waltz. You can hear their bones click on the xylophone! In the morning, a rooster sings, and they all go back to their graves.

Surprising Facts

The solo violinist tunes the top E string down to E-flat. Then the open A and E-flat strings sound together, making the tritone, an interval once called 'the devil in music'. It sounds like Death's spooky, slightly wrong fiddle.

In 'Fossils' from The Carnival of the Animals (1886), Saint-Saëns quoted old songs and famous classical tunes, and even his own Danse macabre on the xylophone. He treated these old melodies as musical 'fossils'. He was happy to laugh at one of his own famous pieces.

Near the end, the oboe plays a short call like a rooster's cry. It means dawn is coming. The skeletons hurry back to their graves, and Death's violin quietly fades away.

In the middle, a melody based on the old chant Dies irae ('Day of Wrath'), long linked with death, appears in waltz rhythm. Turning a solemn prayer into a dance tune is a clever bit of dark humor.
