Aquarium" is the seventh piece in Saint-Saëns's suite "The Carnival of the Animals." Two pianos play quick, rippling notes like moving water, while the flute and strings quietly play a clear, floating melody above them. Now and then, high sparkling notes join in. A mysterious, beautiful world of fish swimming in a tank opens up.
The Carnival of the Animals" is a humorous suite written in 1886 for a private concert around carnival time. Lions, hens, tortoises, elephants and other animals appear one after another. The score of "Aquarium" includes a part for glass harmonica, an instrument played by rubbing glass bowls with wet fingers.
Saint-Saëns worried that a joke piece would hurt his reputation, so he did not allow the suite to be published in his lifetime ("The Swan" was the only exception). The whole suite was published in 1922, the year after his death. Today that part is usually played on a celesta or glockenspiel, and its magical sound has also been used in films.
This music is about fish in an aquarium. The pianos sound like moving water. The flute plays a soft, beautiful tune. Some high notes sparkle like light in the water. It feels like a dream.

The glass harmonica was invented in 1761 by Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, who is also famous for showing that lightning is electricity. Mozart also wrote music for this instrument.
The score calls for a glass harmonica. But this instrument is very rare today, so most performances now use a celesta or a glockenspiel instead.
In Terrence Malick's film "Days of Heaven" (1978), the main theme uses music from "Aquarium." The shimmering music and the beautiful images of wide American wheat fields come together in a memorable way.
"The Carnival of the Animals" was first performed in March 1886, around carnival time, at a private concert held by the cellist Charles Lebouc. It was a musical joke for friends, and it is said that Saint-Saëns himself played one of the pianos.
