The Story

Jeux d'eau is a piano piece Ravel wrote in 1901, when he was a 26-year-old student at the Conservatoire. With quick, glittering notes high on the keyboard, it paints water shooting up from a fountain, sparkling in the light and falling back down. At the top of the score, Ravel quoted a line by the poet Henri de Régnier about a river god laughing as the water tickles him.

Ravel is thought to have used Liszt's piano piece The Fountains of the Villa d'Este as a model. He found a new way of writing for the piano, layering sounds like paint. By blending chords and letting the pedal hold the sound, he captured the shimmer and movement of water. At the same time, he kept a classical shape, using two main themes.

The pianist Ricardo Viñes gave the first performance in 1902. The piece was written before Debussy's Estampes (1903), and it is seen as one of the starting points of the French piano music often called 'Impressionist'. Late in life, Ravel himself wrote that all the new piano ideas people noticed in his music began with this piece.

This piano piece shows water in a fountain. Ravel wrote it when he was 26 years old. The high notes sound like drops of water in the sun. He gave the piece to his teacher, Fauré. It is very hard to play!

When people hear 'Impressionist piano music', many think of Debussy. But Jeux d'eau dates from 1901, before Debussy's Estampes. Late in life, Ravel wrote that his new style of piano writing began with this piece.

Ravel tried many times to win the Prix de Rome, the top prize for young French composers, but never took first place. In 1905 he was even rejected in the first round, which caused a scandal. The head of the Conservatoire resigned, and Ravel's teacher Fauré became the new director.

At the start of the score, Ravel quoted a line from Régnier's poem: 'A river god laughing at the water that tickles him...' Perhaps he imagined not just the sound of water, but a playful, sparkling scene from the world of myths.

The piece is dedicated 'to my dear teacher Gabriel Fauré'. Fauré taught Ravel composition at the Conservatoire. The dedication shows Ravel's thanks to a teacher who supported a student trying to write new kinds of music.
