The Story

Rapsodie espagnole is an orchestral work Ravel wrote in 1907–1908. It has four parts: 'Prelude to the Night', 'Malagueña', 'Habanera' and 'Feria' (Fair). A rhapsody is a free piece that does not follow a fixed form. From a hushed night to a noisy festival, it shows many faces of Spain.

The third part, Habanera, is an orchestral version of a piece Ravel wrote for two pianos in 1895. Ravel had the date '1895' printed in the score. This was probably because people said it was like a Spanish-style piece in Debussy's Estampes (1903), and Ravel wanted to make clear which came first.

It was first performed in Paris in March 1908, conducted by Édouard Colonne. A large orchestra, with castanets, celesta and two harps, surprised listeners with its brilliant colors. The Spanish composer Manuel de Falla is said to have been impressed by how truly Spanish it sounded.

This piece for orchestra is about Spain. It has four parts. It starts on a quiet night. Then there is dancing. At the end, there is a big, noisy festival. You can hear castanets, too!

At the premiere, young people in the cheap upper seats noisily demanded an encore of the second part. There is a famous story that the composer Florent Schmitt shouted, 'Once more, for the gentlemen downstairs who didn't understand!' That day, the young listeners upstairs were especially excited about the new music.

It is said that Debussy once borrowed the score of Ravel's Habanera (1895). Later, Debussy wrote a piece with a similar mood, so Ravel seems to have wanted to show that his came first. The story reveals the slightly tense relationship between two composers often seen as rivals.

In 'Prelude to the Night', four falling notes, F–E–D–C sharp, repeat quietly again and again in the muted strings. It sounds like a magic spell in the night. These four notes also appear in other parts, tying the whole suite together.

Ravel's score calls for a sarrusophone, a rare double-reed woodwind instrument with a metal body. Because it is hardly used today, a contrabassoon usually plays the part instead. Ravel, the magician of the orchestra, loved unusual sounds.
