Ma mère l'Oye is a suite by Ravel for piano duet, with two players at one piano. The French title means 'Mother Goose', a name linked to Charles Perrault's famous collection of fairy tales. Its five pieces, 'Pavane of Sleeping Beauty', 'Tom Thumb', 'Laideronnette, Empress of the Pagodas', 'Conversations of Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Fairy Garden', paint the world of fairy tales in sound.
Ravel wrote it for Mimie and Jean, the children of his close friends, the Godebskis. He kept the music simple enough for children to play. The stories come from fairy tales by Perrault, Madame d'Aulnoy and Madame Leprince de Beaumont. Ravel never married or had children of his own, but he is said to have loved playing with children.
At the premiere in 1910, the pianists were not Mimie and Jean but two girls: 11-year-old Jeanne Leleu and another young pianist. Ravel made an orchestral version in 1911, and in 1912 he added new music and turned it into a ballet. Its gentle, clear sound is loved by children and adults alike, and the final 'Fairy Garden' is a concert favorite.
This music tells fairy tales. Two people play one piano together. Ravel wrote it for two children. He was a friend of their family. He loved to play with children and tell them stories.

The piece was dedicated to Mimie and Jean Godebski. But at the premiere, the pianists were not these two. They were 11-year-old Jeanne Leleu and another girl, Geneviève Durony. Still, it was a charming premiere: music for children, played by children.
'Laideronnette, Empress of the Pagodas' shows little porcelain figures playing music for an empress. The melody uses a five-note (pentatonic) scale, which gives it an Asian flavor. The scene comes from Madame d'Aulnoy's fairy tale The Green Serpent.
In the orchestral 'Conversations of Beauty and the Beast', Beauty is a gentle waltz on the clarinet, and the Beast is the very low contrabassoon. When the Beast turns back into a prince, the music suddenly becomes light and bright. It's a transformation scene you can hear!
'Tom Thumb' tells of a boy who drops bread crumbs to find his way home, but birds eat them. The score quotes a line from Perrault's tale, and in the orchestral version the bird calls are played by violins and woodwinds. Slow, wandering lines show how it feels to be lost.
