This prelude is a piano piece written by Rachmaninoff in 1901, and it is the fifth of the Ten Preludes, Op. 23. The score is marked 'Alla marcia', meaning 'like a march', and a sharp marching rhythm drives the music forward powerfully. It is one of the most popular of all Rachmaninoff's preludes.
1901 was the year Rachmaninoff finished his Second Piano Concerto and got his confidence back. This prelude was written about two years earlier than the other nine, and the set was published together in 1903. The set is dedicated to Alexander Siloti, his cousin and also his piano teacher. Between the bold marching sections, a dreamy, sweet song flows in the middle.
Rachmaninoff himself gave the first performance in Moscow in 1903. At the end, as if all the boldness had been a dream, a quiet run climbs up to a high note and simply fades away. Boldness and tenderness live side by side in this very Rachmaninoff-like piece, and today many pianists play it at concerts and competitions.
This is a piano piece by Rachmaninoff. It sounds like a march. The rhythm is strong and sharp. In the middle, there is a sweet, slow song. At the end, the music becomes very quiet.

Rachmaninoff's preludes add up to exactly 24: the famous Prelude in C-sharp minor (Op. 3 No. 2), the 10 preludes of Op. 23 and the 13 of Op. 32. Together they use each of the 24 keys once. Like Chopin's 24 Preludes, they form a set that travels through every key.
Of the 10 preludes in Op. 23, only No. 5 was written in 1901, and the others came around 1903. So it was born about two years before its brothers and sisters in the set. The energy of the time when Rachmaninoff made his comeback with the Second Concerto seems to overflow in its bold rhythm.
Alexander Siloti, to whom Op. 23 is dedicated, was Rachmaninoff's cousin and a pianist who had studied with Liszt. At the Moscow Conservatory, he taught the young Rachmaninoff piano. It is said that later, when Rachmaninoff was going through a hard time, Siloti also helped him with money.
Even though it is a bold, march-like piece, it ends not loudly but very softly, pianissimo. A small run climbs up to a high note, and then the music is gone. Listeners who expect a big, loud finish are often surprised by this unexpected ending.
