Élégie is the first piece in Morceaux de fantaisie (Fantasy Pieces), Op. 3, a set of piano pieces Rachmaninoff wrote in 1892 at the age of 19. An elegy is a song of sorrow. In the dark, deep sound of E-flat minor, a heartbreaking melody sings over a flowing accompaniment in the left hand.
In 1892, Rachmaninoff had just graduated from the Moscow Conservatory and won the Great Gold Medal for his graduation work, the opera Aleko. Morceaux de fantaisie has five pieces: Élégie, Prélude, Mélodie, Polichinelle and Sérénade. The second piece is the Prelude in C-sharp minor, which later became a worldwide hit, sometimes nicknamed 'The Bells'. The set was dedicated to his conservatory teacher, Anton Arensky.
Élégie is often hidden in the shadow of its famous neighbor, the Prelude, but it is a beautiful piece full of the young Rachmaninoff's rich melody and deep sadness. His way of writing long, breathing melodies, which later blossomed in his concertos and symphonies, can already be heard here. It is a piece that quietly stays by your side when you want to calm your heart.
This is a sad piano piece by Rachmaninoff. He wrote it when he was 19 years old. 'Élégie' means a song of sadness. The melody is slow and beautiful. The next piece in the set is his very famous prelude, 'The Bells'.

The second piece in the same set, the Prelude in C-sharp minor, became hugely popular around the world after it was published. It is said that audiences demanded it as an encore at almost every concert, until Rachmaninoff grew tired of it. In its shadow, the first piece, Élégie, became a hidden gem.
Morceaux de fantaisie is dedicated to Anton Arensky, who taught Rachmaninoff harmony and other subjects at the Moscow Conservatory. Arensky was a composer himself, and works such as his Piano Trio No. 1 are still performed today. The young Rachmaninoff showed his thanks to his teacher with this set.
In 1892, Rachmaninoff won the Great Gold Medal of the Moscow Conservatory for his graduation work, the opera Aleko. It was a very great honor. Élégie is a work from the time when this young genius had just left the conservatory and was stepping out into the world as a composer.
The great composer Tchaikovsky warmly supported Rachmaninoff at this time. He admired Aleko and applauded enthusiastically at its premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1893. But Tchaikovsky died that same year, and in his deep grief, Rachmaninoff wrote his Trio élégiaque No. 2 in his memory.
