The Story

Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks is the music for the fifth picture in Mussorgsky's piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. Quick, high hopping notes and tiny grace notes (little decorative notes) paint a cheerful picture of chicks with their legs poking out of eggshells, scurrying about. It is very short and is one of the most playful and charming pieces in the suite.

The piece is based on a costume design that the artist Hartmann drew for the ballet Trilby. In that ballet, children from the Imperial Ballet School danced dressed as birds, butterflies, and canary chicks inside eggshells. The exhibition catalogue is said to have described the picture as 'canary chicks, enclosed in eggs as in suits of armor'.

Pictures at an Exhibition was not published during Mussorgsky's lifetime; it came out in 1886. In 1922, Ravel arranged it for orchestra, and in this piece the oboes, clarinets and other woodwinds cheep and chirp merrily. If you compare the piano and orchestral versions, you may see the same chicks in a different light.

This is a short piano piece by Mussorgsky. It is about baby birds in eggshells. The notes are high and quick. The chicks hop and run around. It is short, funny and cute!

Many of Hartmann's pictures behind Pictures at an Exhibition are lost. But this costume design for the chicks is one of the few that survive. It shows chicks dressed up in their eggshells. It is a rare piece where we can compare the music with the picture.

In the ballet Trilby, the chicks were danced by children from the Russian Imperial Ballet School. Little dancers in eggshell costumes scurried around the stage. Mussorgsky's music seems to turn their cute movements straight into sound.

The score calls this piece a 'Scherzino', which means a small scherzo, a quick and playful piece. In the middle there is a slightly different section called the Trio, and then the first part comes back. It is a tiny piece, but it is built in a proper form.

The picture before this one is Bydło, the ox cart, a heavy piece in which a cart slowly rolls past. After a short Promenade, this piece follows with chicks scurrying about in high notes, so the contrast is great fun. Pictures at an Exhibition delights listeners with clever contrasts like this.
