Violin Concerto No. 5 was written in Salzburg in 1775, when Mozart was 19. It is the last of his five violin concertos. Its nickname, 'Turkish,' comes from a noisy, wild section in the middle of the third movement that imitates the Turkish military bands that were fashionable in Europe at the time.
In the first movement, the orchestra plays a lively theme, and then the solo violin finally enters. But instead of playing fast right away, it first sings gently in a slow Adagio. No other Mozart concerto has an entrance like this. It is a bold idea from a 19-year-old, designed to surprise the listener.
The third movement begins at the elegant pace of a minuet. But in the middle, the meter changes to two beats, and wild 'Turkish' music in A minor bursts in. The cellos and double basses hit the strings with the wood of their bows, a technique called col legno, to make a sound like percussion. Finally, the elegant minuet returns, and the piece ends quietly.
This is Mozart's last violin concerto. The last part starts like a polite dance. Then, suddenly, the music becomes wild and noisy! It sounds like a Turkish army band. Some players hit the strings with the wood of their bows!

In the first movement, after the orchestra's lively opening, the solo violin surprisingly enters with a short, gentle Adagio. Only after that does the fast main part begin. This is the only Mozart concerto in which the soloist's first entrance happens like this.
In the 'Turkish' section, the cellos and double basses use col legno, hitting the strings with the wood of the bow instead of the hair. The orchestra in this concerto has no percussion, but this technique makes a sound like the drums of a Turkish band. It is a clever way to make drums out of strings.
The music of this wild 'Turkish' section is said to come from a ballet, Le gelosie del serraglio, which Mozart wrote as a teenager in Milan for performances of his opera Lucio Silla. He reused music from a Turkish-themed stage work in his concerto.
The Adagio in E major, K. 261, is generally believed to have been written in 1776 as a replacement for this concerto's second movement. According to a letter from his father Leopold, the Salzburg violinist Antonio Brunetti found the original movement 'too studied.' Today, the concerto is usually played with its original second movement.
