The 'Twinkle Variations' is a set of twelve piano variations Mozart wrote on the French song 'Ah vous dirai-je, Maman' ('Oh, shall I tell you, Mother'). In a set of variations, one melody is reborn again and again with new rhythms, harmonies and moods. The melody is the same one used for the English nursery song 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'.
The melody was first published in France in 1761, and nobody knows who wrote it. The English poem 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' was written by Jane Taylor in 1806 and was later sung to this tune. So when Mozart wrote his variations, the 'Twinkle' song did not yet exist.
It was once thought to date from Mozart's stay in Paris in 1778, but most scholars now believe he wrote it in Vienna around 1781 or 1782. It was published in Vienna in 1785. From the rippling notes of Variation 1 to the sad minor-key Variation 8 and the slow Variation 11, the simple tune is transformed in amazingly rich ways.
You know this song: 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'. Mozart used the same tune. He changed it twelve times! Sometimes it is fast. Sometimes it is sad.

People often think Mozart wrote this as a child because the tune is a children's song. In fact, it is thought to be from his mid-twenties. And the melody itself is not by Mozart at all; it was a French song.
As the French title 'Ah! vous dirai-je, maman' ('Oh, shall I tell you, Mother') suggests, the original song is about telling a secret to one's mother. It became a song about a star only after the English poem was set to this tune. The same melody became completely different songs in different countries.
The 'Alphabet Song' that children use to learn the ABCs is usually sung to this tune as well. 'Twinkle', the ABC song and Mozart's variations: this one melody has become the very first music for many children around the world.
In some of the twelve variations, such as Variation 2, it is the left hand, not the right, that plays fast running notes. The melody stays the same, but each variation needs a different technique, which makes the piece excellent practice for pianists.
