Symphony No. 39 was entered in Mozart's own catalogue of his works on 26 June 1788. No. 40 followed on 25 July, and No. 41, the 'Jupiter,' on 10 August. So No. 39 was the first of the three great symphonies born that summer, and it is sometimes called the brightest and most open-hearted of the three.
A special feature of this symphony is that it uses clarinets instead of oboes. The clarinet was still a fairly new member of the orchestra then, and Mozart loved its soft tone. In the middle section (the trio) of the third movement, two clarinets play a gentle tune that sounds like an Austrian country dance.
Nobody knows for sure why these three symphonies were written. There is also no clear record showing whether they were performed during Mozart's lifetime. That summer, Mozart was short of money and wrote letters to his friend Michael Puchberg asking for loans. Even in such a hard time, he created this sunny music.
This is a bright and happy symphony. Mozart wrote it in the summer of 1788. In that summer, he wrote three great symphonies! This one has no oboes. Instead, clarinets sing a sweet song.

Oboes were very common in symphonies of that time. But No. 39 uses no oboes at all and adds clarinets instead. It is Mozart's only symphony with clarinets but no oboes. That gives the whole piece a soft, mellow sound.
In June 1788, Mozart wrote several letters to his friend, the merchant Michael Puchberg, asking to borrow money. In the same month, he finished this cheerful symphony. Listening to the music alone, you would never guess the composer was having such a hard time.
The last movement is lively music in which a short theme is chased around the orchestra. At the very end, it simply plays the beginning of the theme and stops. It is like someone suddenly saying 'The end!' in the middle of a story, and some say it shows humor learned from Haydn.
In the trio of the third movement, the first clarinet plays a peaceful melody while the second clarinet plays a rolling accompaniment in its low register. It recalls the Ländler, a country dance from Austria. You can enjoy both the high and low colors of the clarinet.
