The Queen of the Night's aria is sung in Act 2 of The Magic Flute. The Queen orders her daughter Pamina to get rid of her enemy, the high priest Sarastro. The words begin 'Hell's vengeance boils in my heart'. It is a wild aria in which her anger seems to explode, and one of the most famous arias in all of opera.
The aria is famous above all for how difficult it is. The Queen's voice races through fast runs on single syllables of the text and leaps to very high notes in short, almost laughing bursts. The highest note is a high F, far above what most sopranos sing. Singers who specialise in this kind of brilliant singing are called coloratura sopranos.
At the premiere, the Queen was sung by Josepha Hofer, the older sister of Mozart's wife Constanze. Mozart is thought to have written the role to suit her very high voice. The role needs a coloratura soprano with a very high, agile voice, and a fine performance often brings huge applause.
The Queen of the Night is very angry. She sings a very difficult song. Her voice goes very, very high. She sings many fast notes, and some parts sound like a laugh. The song needs a special high voice.

NASA's Voyager probes, launched in 1977, carry the 'Golden Record', with sounds and music from Earth. One of the tracks is this aria, sung by Edda Moser. The Queen of the Night's song is still travelling far out in space.
Josepha Hofer, the first Queen of the Night, was the older sister of Mozart's wife Constanze, which made her his sister-in-law. Several of Constanze's sisters were singers, and another sister, Aloysia, was a woman Mozart had fallen in love with when he was young.
In Act 1, the Queen appears as a sad mother whose daughter has been taken away, and she asks Prince Tamino for help. But in Act 2 she shows her true face: a frightening queen burning with anger. In this strange opera, the 'good' and 'bad' characters seem to switch places halfway through.
The Queen also sings a difficult aria in Act 1, 'O zittre nicht' ('Oh, do not tremble'), full of high notes and fast runs. She sings only these two arias, yet she is said to be one of the most unforgettable characters in opera.
