Non più andrai' is the aria that ends Act 1 of Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. Cherubino, a teenage boy who flutters around every woman like a butterfly, is ordered by the Count to join the army. Figaro, the Count's servant, teases him, singing that his days of fluttering around are over and that he must now become a soldier.
The Marriage of Figaro was Mozart's first opera with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, and it is based on a play by the French writer Beaumarchais. In this aria, the music turns into a real military march with trumpets and drums, as Figaro humorously describes fancy uniforms and the battlefield. The words and rhythm fit perfectly, making it Figaro's biggest moment in the act.
The opera premiered on May 1, 1786, at the Burgtheater in Vienna. It later became a huge hit in Prague, and in his next opera, Don Giovanni, Mozart had a band play this tune during the dinner scene. He even had the servant Leporello say that he knows this tune all too well. It was a clever joke about his own music.
This song comes from a funny opera. A young boy is always in love. Now he must go to the army. Figaro sings and teases him. The music sounds like a big march.

According to the memoirs of Michael Kelly, a singer at the premiere, when Benucci sang this aria as Figaro at a rehearsal, the singers and orchestra players shouted 'Bravo, Maestro! Long live Mozart!'
In the dinner scene of Don Giovanni, a band plays popular opera tunes, and this aria is one of them. When the servant Leporello says he knows it all too well, it is Mozart's wink at how popular Figaro was in Prague.
In January 1787, Mozart visited Prague and wrote to a friend that people there talked about nothing but Figaro, and that nothing was played, sung or whistled except Figaro. The whole city was full of tunes from this opera.
Cherubino, the boy being teased, is usually sung by a woman, a mezzo-soprano. Her voice gives the character a youthful sound. Roles like this, where a woman plays a male character, are called 'trouser roles', and they are a long tradition in opera.
