The Magic Flute is an opera by Mozart, first performed on 30 September 1791, the year he died, at the Theater auf der Wieden near Vienna. The libretto was by Emanuel Schikaneder, an actor and the theatre's manager. It is a fairy-tale story in which Prince Tamino sets out with a magic flute to rescue Princess Pamina.
The Magic Flute is a Singspiel, a popular kind of German opera with spoken dialogue between the songs. The overture begins with three solemn chords. The number three is important in this opera, which also has three ladies and three boys. Both Mozart and Schikaneder were Freemasons, members of a society for which the number three had special meaning.
After the chords, the music becomes fast and light, with the instruments chasing the same tune one after another. The opera was a great success and was performed again and again. But Mozart died on 5 December, about two months after the premiere, at the age of 35. It is said that even on his sickbed he watched the clock and imagined the performance going on.
This is the start of a magic opera. A prince has a magic flute. He goes to save a princess. The music starts with three big chords. Then it becomes fast and happy.

The fast tune in the overture sounds very much like a theme from a piano sonata by Muzio Clementi. In 1781 Mozart and Clementi had a piano contest in front of the emperor, and Clementi is said to have played that sonata. Later, Clementi added a note about this to his published score.
During one performance, Mozart sneaked backstage and played the glockenspiel himself in the scene where Schikaneder, as Papageno, pretends to play it. He played at the wrong moments, then didn't play at all, and Schikaneder got flustered while the audience laughed. Mozart described it in a letter to his wife.
According to Mozart's catalogue, the overture and the 'March of the Priests' were entered on 28 September 1791, just two days before the premiere. Overtures were often written last, but this was still very close to the deadline.
Papageno, the cheerful bird-catcher, was played by Schikaneder himself, the man who wrote the libretto. He ran the theatre and was a popular actor. Working with this born entertainer, Mozart created a show full of laughter and magic.
