This sonata for two pianos was written in Vienna in 1781, when Mozart was 25. That year, he left the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg and began living in Vienna as a freelance musician. The piece is in bright D major, and the two pianos pass melodies back and forth and copy each other, like a lively conversation.
Mozart wrote this piece to play with his pupil, the pianist Josepha Auernhammer. The two of them probably played it at a concert at the Auernhammer family's home in November 1781. The two pianos are completely equal, and neither one just plays the accompaniment. The music only works when the two players are perfectly in tune with each other.
In 1993, American researchers reported in the science journal Nature that college students who listened to this piece for about ten minutes did a little better on tasks using shapes and space. This became famous as the 'Mozart effect.' But the effect was small and lasted only a short time, and many later studies could not get the same result. Saying it 'makes you smarter just by listening' goes too far.
This music is for two pianos. Two people play together. The pianos talk to each other like friends. In 1993, scientists used this music in a famous test. Some people said, 'Mozart makes you smart!' But it is not so simple.
In the 1993 study, scores on tasks like turning shapes around in your head went up a little right after listening to this piece. But the effect was reported to fade within about 15 minutes, and later studies gave mixed results. Even so, the idea that 'it makes babies smarter' spread, and CDs were even sold for that purpose.
Josepha Auernhammer was a skilled pianist who studied piano with Mozart in Vienna. Mozart dedicated a set of violin sonatas published in 1781 to her. She later became a pianist and composer in Vienna herself.
Mozart wrote several pieces for two players at one piano, but this is the only sonata for two pianos he finished. Some fragments of other pieces he started but never completed also survive. It is a precious work that shows the fun of two pianos.
In 1781, Mozart had a big fight with the Archbishop of Salzburg and quit his job. In a letter to his father, he wrote that Count Arco, one of the archbishop's officials, kicked him out of the room. That year, after choosing a free life in Vienna, Mozart wrote this bright sonata.
