This Rondeau is the first piece in the first of Jean-Joseph Mouret's Suites de symphonies, dated 1729. The first suite is titled 'Fanfares for trumpets, timpani, violins and oboes,' and just as the name says, trumpets and timpani ring out brightly. It sounds grand, like the entrance of a king.
Mouret was born in Avignon, in southern France. At the château of Sceaux near Paris, he served the Duchess of Maine, the wife of one of Louis XIV's sons, and wrote music for her lavish evening entertainments. He later directed the Paris Opéra orchestra and the Concert Spirituel, a popular concert series in Paris, and became a busy man of the theater and concert world.
In his last years, however, Mouret lost one job after another, fell into poverty and became mentally ill. He died in 1738 in an institution near Paris. His music was forgotten for a long time, but in the 20th century this Rondeau found new fans. In 1971, it became the theme of Masterpiece Theatre, a drama program on the American public broadcaster PBS, and it is also played at weddings and other celebrations.
This music starts with trumpets and drums. It sounds like a king is coming in! The composer lived in France about 300 years ago. Today, many Americans know it from a TV show. Some people play it at their wedding, too.

Masterpiece Theatre, which started on the American public broadcaster PBS in 1971, presents fine British drama series. This Rondeau was chosen as its theme, and many Americans came to know it as 'that drama music.' So an old French piece became the face of an American program for British dramas.
Mouret wrote music for the 'Great Nights of Sceaux,' luxurious evening entertainments with plays and music, held by the Duchess of Maine at her château near Paris. Because of his graceful style, he is said to have been called 'the musician of the Graces.'
A fanfare is a short, bright signal played by brass instruments such as trumpets. It was used to announce a king, to celebrate, and to give signals in hunting and battle. Mouret's first suite is built on this idea, with oboes and violins adding even more brightness.
Mouret was a star in Paris, but in his last years he lost his jobs, became poor and was sent to an institution because of mental illness. He died in 1738, and nobody knows where he was buried. Today his music sounds at celebrations around the world, a strange twist of fate.
